Feminism

Feminism is a key area of media theory and an excellent intro to A2 Media Studies.

You should all by now have produced a creative piece dealing with some of the issues around Feminism and the Media. Well done Luke, Tom, Chris, Faye and Rebecca for producing some thoughtful work. Sebastian and Emily still have to show evidence.

Task for Monday 12th July: using notes, handouts and research, compile a media mini-notebook of examples, annotaton, comment, analysis and responses on the theme of Media and Feminism.

Welcome to Year 13, class of 2010-11

The focus for the next few weeks is on theory as you need this to flesh out your deconstruction work this year. Feminism, Post-feminism, Marxism and Gramsci will be the areas of investigation.
There's lots of good media news around at the moment:

  • How much the BBC pays its top 'talent'. Should this be made public?
  • Look at the banned Diesel jean ad campaign.
  • 'Breastfeeding is creepy' comments from deputy editor of Mother & Baby magazine, Kathryn Blundell.
  • Times onLine starts its 'pay per read' policy. Readers pay to read full news articles. What do you think?
  • Price war between Sky, Virgin Media and BT vision.

Media Teacher stranded in New York City

I'm stranded with my family here in New York. Lots of iconic media material to keep me going but you need to keep working on the impact of new digital media. Please write an essay for next Wednesday on:
"Digital media empowers users but trivialises content. To what extent to you agree with this statement?"
